East Africa Adopts 10-Year Tourism Strategy and Joint Visa

A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding is currently being coordinated to manage the Kidepo-Karamoja-Turkana Transboundary Conservation Area between Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda. This agreement serves as a vital component of a broader regional effort recently solidified by tourism and wildlife ministers from across the East African Community. During the 13th Meeting of the Sectoral Council on Tourism and Wildlife Management in Arusha, delegates formally adopted a comprehensive marketing strategy that will span the decade from 2027 to 2036. This initiative is designed to unify the diverse tourism offerings of eight member states into a single, cohesive brand known as “Visit East AfricFeel the Vibe.” By working together, these nations intend to overcome previous fragmentation and present a competitive, world-class destination to the global market. The strategy acknowledges that the region’s immense natural beauty and cultural heritage are best leveraged through collective action and integrated planning.

Strategic Integration: A Unified Regional Identity

The Feel the Vibe Branding Campaign

The branding initiative “Visit East AfricFeel the Vibe” represents a significant shift toward a more integrated digital marketing approach intended to reach a broader international audience. This strategy moves away from individual national promotions, focusing instead on the shared identity and unique biodiversity that define the entire East African landscape. By consolidating resources, the community can execute larger promotional campaigns in major markets like Europe and North America that highlight the region’s unique allure.

Leveraging strategic partnerships with international travel agencies and utilizing sophisticated digital platforms, the member states aim to showcase integrated travel packages that highlight both popular landmarks and hidden gems. The focus is on creating a narrative that emphasizes the authenticity and vibrancy of the region’s cultural heritage. Ministers have emphasized that this collective branding is essential for attracting high-value tourists who are looking for multi-dimensional experiences across borders.

Facilitating Seamless Travel with a Joint Visa

Central to the success of this 10-year strategy is the long-awaited implementation of the joint EAC tourism visa, which is designed to facilitate seamless travel for international visitors. This visa aims to eliminate the need for multiple entry permits, allowing travelers to move freely between member states with a single application. National consultations are currently being expedited to ensure that the administrative and technical frameworks are in place to support this transition before the next peak season.

Beyond the convenience of travel, the joint visa is expected to boost the regional economy by encouraging longer stays and increased spending across multiple countries. The council has directed the Secretariat to coordinate the finalization of the Single Tourist Visa protocols, recognizing that ease of movement is a critical factor in global tourism competitiveness. By integrating digital visa systems, the region will offer a modern, efficient entry process that rivals other major global tourism hubs.

Operational Readiness: Standards and Global Competitions

Leveraging the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

The upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, or AFCON, is viewed as a major catalyst for the region’s tourism expansion, providing a global stage to attract a massive influx of international fans. Ministers have committed to using this prestigious sporting event to promote East Africa as a singular destination, ensuring that the economic benefits extend well beyond the borders of the host nations. This sports-tourism nexus is expected to generate thousands of jobs and stimulate local infrastructure development.

To maximize this opportunity, Uganda has been selected to host the 4th EAC Regional Tourism Expo in May 2027, which will serve as a primary promotional vehicle for the tournament. This expo will focus on showcasing the region’s readiness to host global events and will facilitate the creation of special travel packages for visiting fans. The alignment of regional tourism marketing with major international sports ensures that East Africa remains in the global spotlight, attracting a new demographic of travelers.

Harmonizing Quality Standards for Sustainable Growth

To ensure the region was fully prepared for an increase in global visitors, the council focused on the urgent harmonization of tourism grading and classification standards across all member states. These measures were designed to guarantee a high level of service and hospitality, meeting international expectations for accommodation and facilities. The acceleration of these standards was prioritized ahead of the 2027 tournament to maintain the integrity of the regional brand and ensure consistency for guests.

Furthermore, the integration of the EAC Barometer provided essential data-driven insights into travel trends, allowing for more precise management of resources and conservation efforts. These actions established a resilient framework for the private sector to invest with confidence in the regional market. Ultimately, the adoption of the unified strategy transformed the tourism sector into a sustainable pillar of the economy, realizing the vast, untapped potential of its natural landmarks and wildlife.
